Reach Out and Touch Someone, with Martha’s Vineyard Live Music

Charity begins at home, and Martha’s Vineyard Live Music is happy to help!

One of the great things about summers on Martha’s Vineyard is that this is a season of giving. Since the island is abuzz with people and activity from the Memorial to Labor Day weekends, this timeframe is a perfect opportunity to participate in various charity events that are held all over the island.

We at Martha’s Vineyard Live Music happily support worthwhile causes because we see it as our contribution to improving the lives of needy children and adults in this community and beyond.

We will be so happy if you join us in making a positive and meaningful difference in the lives of so many people!

We are the world

Two of our favorite community programs are Possible Dreams and the Farm Institute.

The first one, which will take place on July 28 at the Winnetu Oceanside Resort in Edgartown is a benefit for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, a wonderful organization that improves the lives of individuals and families in the MV communities. It offers early childhood programs, disability services, counseling, a thrift shop, and advocacy against domestic and other types of violence.

All these much needed but under-funded programs are supported by the annual Possible Dreams auction, named after one of the island’s most prominent residents, the late newspaper columnist Art Buchwald.

As for the Farm Institute, we love the fact that it offers interesting and educational programs for children and adults.  All the programs focus on sustainable agriculture, a concept that is unfortunately being lost in today’s industrialized world, but one that we believe is crucial for our health as well as the future of our environment.

Among its community outreach programs, the Farm Institute distributes food to needy island residents, provides discounted food for school lunches, and runs summer camps as well as residential programs for inner-city youth.

On July 20, the Institute will hold its annual Meals in the Meadow event on its site in Katama to raise money for its community projects. What fun this promises to be!

A multitude of events

Of course, there are also many other fundraising activities happening on Martha’s Vineyard this summer, all of which are worthy of our support.

For example:

  • On June 1, Relay for Life to raise money for the American Cancer Society will take place in Oak Bluffs.

  • On July 4, there’s the Murdick’s 5-mile Run the Chop race for the benefit of our community’s Big Brother / Big Sister program.

  • And on August 12. Martha’s Vineyard Hospice will hold its Summer Soiree Anniversary Party at Farm Neck Golf Club. The money raised at this event will help the hospice’s community-supported programs focusing on bringing comfort and compassion to people suffering from advanced illness.

Music to the rescue

Of course, live music makes any event so much more enjoyable and we are happy to see that some of the fundraisers scheduled for this summer will include a concert.

For example, (and this list is obviously non-exhaustive), you will contribute to the preservation of MV’s historic landmarks, taste great food, AND listen to fun music by attending The Taste of the Vineyard event on June 13 at Old Whaling Church Lawn, 89 Main Street in Edgartown. Jerry Bennett and the Sultans of Swing’s 12-piece band will provide a musical backdrop to the fun event.

On July 27, a concert for the Alliance for Children Foundation will take place at Dreamland in Oak Bluffs. The event, for the benefit of homeless Haitian children, will feature singer/songwriter Lori McKenna and a full band with special guest Kiley Evans.

As we said, this list is far from complete, so click on this link to see what other charitable events are scheduled for summer 2013:

All this community outreach is one of numerous reasons we at Martha’s Vineyard Live Music just love summer on the island!
